Doing some guitar recording today.  Tried a slightly different mic setup this time.  Did my standard Telefunken M80 pointed a little off-axis from the cone & a Shure SM57, set at the same distance as the M80 but at a slight 45 degree angle.  The difference is I’m putting an M Audio Sputnik condenser at the back of the speaker cab aimed at the right corner.  Not a standard guitar mic, but it works real nice.  Blasted some white noise through the cab to get the phase of all the mics matched as closely as possible.

I did a quick test recording to check the sound.  I was fooling around with a riff while dialing my guitar amp/mic preamps and I liked it enough to lay something down. Then I decided to lay a quick second guitar part over it, just bs’ing some stuff.  Took about 15-20 minutes to get everything down.  Delay & reverb was added in Pro Tools.

I’m pretty happy with this setup.  I feel it accurately captures the sound of the amp in the room (or closet rather) with the blend of the 3 mics.

Guitar equipment used: Fender Stratocaster w/Detemple Sweetspot pickups.  Cornford Roadhouse 30 head.  Custom made 1X12 convertible cab (used it closed back for this recording) outfitted with a Celestion Vintage 30.

This is post for the gearheads  ;p

I got myself a fancy new piece of “kit” (as our British friends would say), that’s “gear” to you and me. Scored an A-Designs REDDI tube DI for a good price so I decided to do a quick A/B with my existing DI box, a Radial J48 active DI.  I did this for my own reference but am posting this up in case any of you are interested in hearing the results.  I just recorded the bass intro to one of my songs w/drums.

This is by no means a real scientific comparison…just a quick shootout between my two boxes.  I’m using a Lakland Bob Glaub P-Bass, w/Lindy Fralin pickups.  The preamp I’m using is a Presonus ADL 600.  I tried my best to match the gain on both examples as close as possible.  Other than some slight adjustments of the trim knob, the setting on the preamp was the same for both takes.

The first example in the clip was recorded w/the REDDI and the second, with the J48. I’m not gonna state my preference, but I gotta say the j48 holds it’s own at about 1/6 the price of the REDDI.

Enjoy! =)

Recording tonight, still have the mic up so I decided to take a quick audio snapshot of what I’m doing right now & post it up. I’m just crazy like that.  hmmm.. maybe it needs to be auto tuned?
